Sometimes, I get these extreme obsessions. I can’t think about anything else as long as it lasts, and I’m filled with this burning urge to know more about the thing I’m obsessed with. This time last year it was Dr Who, and I didn’t pause until I’d seen every episode of the new series, plus loads of extras and bought several effects.

I might sound mad, but I’ve always been like this. I find it mighty interesting, as I learn a lot about what I’m interested in, and I’ve also made many new friends and done things I’ve never thought I’d ever get to do because of it. Like travelling numerous of times to London to watch The Phantom of the Opera (even all alone..!!), sleeping in a tent in -25 degrees celcius to watch Rally Norway, or meeting some of my great idols like the the Top Gear guys, Arthur Darvill and David Tennant.
People tend to grow tired of my various obsessions, but I would never have it any different. I love it!

My most recent obsession is a combination of the new TV series Outlander, and Tuomas Holopainen’s new album with music inspired by “The Life and Times of Scrooge”. I don’t think this will be a long lasting obsession though, since there won’t be a new season of Outlander until next year. And without new input, I’ll soon find something else to obsess over.

But still, I am strongly considering re-watching season 1, and then read the book when it arrives. My “must-know-everything”-urge had me ordering the book only a couple of days ago, and I am waiting in silent agony for it’s arrival.

In the meantime, I’m listening to a mix of Holopainen’s songs and the series soundtrack. The theme song, Skye Boat Song is really beautiful, and the lyrics fits very well to the storyline.

Time travelling has always been an interesting subject, and so is seeing how people lived in earlier days. Seriously, I could easily have watched several episodes just about the daily life in 1700’s Scotland..! And unlike other historical series I’ve watched, Outlander shows us quite a lot of daily life, and I think that’s one of the things that made this obsession sneak in on me.

As of Holopainen’s songs, they hit me right in the heart because I am and have always been a great fan of Don Rosa’s Scrooge McDuck stories. When a colleague introduced me to these songs and I found out that the whole album was actually inspired by “The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck”, I just HAD to listen to it more carefully. All the songs are that kind of music that I would’ve fallen for no matter what it was inspired by. It’s majestic and movie soundtrack-like some places, then it’s emotional and reminiscent in other, and the lyrics are the same. They tell stories about beautiful wilderness, sleeping under the stars, lost loves, great memories of great adventures, and missing home.

It has really captured the very essence of Don Rosa’s stories, also using a lot of Rosa’s own words in the lyrics. The music is haunting, and using everything from bagpipes to fiddles and didgeridoo’s you can almost know which era of Scrooge’s life that certain moment is representing.

 For some reason, these songs fills me with inspiration, and makes me want to create stuff. Like this post, to share my obsession with others. I usually get little to no response on such blogs, but it’s a relief to just put my thoughts and excitements into words.
